Care & Maintenance

Terrazzo floors are practical, hard wearing and very easy to clean. To maintain their pristine appearance, Quiligotti recommends the following simple steps to a beautiful, long lasting floor.

DAY TO DAY CARE
Stains should be removed as soon as possible before they dry out. Stubborn areas of dirt caused by sticky sweets and chewing gum should first be removed with a palette knife or similar utensil. Loose dirt and debris should be swept with a large, soft broom or ideally a ‘v’ shaped scissor mop. Floors should be scrubbed using a solution of clear water and neutral (pH7) cleaning agent mixed strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. A two tank machine should be used – one for clean water and one for picking up soiled water. If this is not available, cleaning water should be changed regularly to ensure complete removal of dirt. Best results are obtained using automatic scrubbing pads which must be cleaned and checked regularly to prevent damage to the surface of the floor. Terrazzo floor can be polished or burnished to enhance the shine using a high speed polishing machine and a red polishing pad.

Acids and alkaline-based cleaning agents should not be used as these may damage the floor surface or destroy the cement base. High soap content cleaning agents or waxing the floor may cause the floor to become slippery so these should be avoided. Use of disinfectants is not recommended as these may stain the tiles.

Neutral cleaning agent (pH7) should be used to clean your Terrazzo floor. Use of incorrect cleaning products, or lack of correct maintenance may damage the floor, causing pitting or damage to the cement grout in the joints.

NEVER use metallic brushes or wire wool pads as these will damage the floor surface. ALWAYS USE NEUTRAL (pH7) CLEANING DETERGENT

LONGER TERM MAINTENANCE
Quiligotti does not recommend surface sealing or waxing of terrazzo. This is because the seal can wear differentially, particularly in areas of heavy foot traffic, causing an unsightly finish. Removal of these surface sealers can potentially damage the finish of the floor. At the time of installation a penetrating sealant case hardener, such as Lapidolith, is normally applied immediately after polishing to seal off the pores and improve resistance to staining.

REFURBISHMENT
Terrazzo floors are renowned for their durability and with proper care will outwear most other flooring materials. Unlike other surfaces, after many years of use, terrazzo’s good looks can be restored if required by re-grinding and re-polishing the floor, returning it to pristine condition.
